Il Segromigno Monastery

Il Segromigno Monastery in Lucca Tuscany

This place is perfect for weddings and large groups who seek it all. Owned by this dynamo of a woman - a public and private physician, cook and owner of this and another rental. Where she gets her energy I don't know. The Italian government should hook up the electric grid to her for supplemental energy. I had dinner with her in the monastery when it was under massive renovation - about 2004 - and an Italian artist intern specializing in historic fresco recreations was there working on the rooms recreating yesterday's splendor. Although I have never been a monk, or visited the interior rooms of a Convent or Monastery, I am sure they pined for the style and amenities this place has.

The monastery has all the comforts one needs in a modern world...and when on vacation with family or friends: pool, AC, WiFi, TV and more. Il Segromigno Monastery is also convenient to town - a small village with all the stuff of local flavor, postal, bank, bar, alimentari, pizzeria...all a walk from the rental. There is also a restaurant 1 km from the rental. Lucca is 15 minutes drive (9 km). GREAT location.

The villa is set in a lovely area of Lucca. Hilly countryside surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, 9 km from Lucca and near some great local touring including historic villas of the region. Lucca is well known for their monumental villas. The Villa is part of an old convent of Cappucini monks that dates back to 1600.

The Giardino all'Italiana (sculpted gardens) has been brought back to its original design - which is in itself an amazing historic benefit to you, and a large pool surrounded by cascades of roses (the owner is known for her floral design - did I mention she designs the gardens of her houses too?) welcome the guests in a way many can not. The villa is a big place - about 700 square meters...nearly 7000 square feet for you Americans and Brits.

Perfect for: Friends, families, groups and weddings.

A Little on the Region
Although we are biased on such matters, and may be preaching to the choir, Lucca is arguably the best city in Tuscany. It is also the closest to most of our Lucca based rentals. There are loads of reasons this is a great place to visit (olive oil for example, lack of tourists another). To the benefit of you and the proud locals, Lucca has completely retained the original thick walls around the centro storico. As the wide walls lost their military importance, abruptly ended with the conquering Bonaparte in 1805, no match for his modern might, they became as they are today: a pedestrian only park that rings the city entirely providing a wonderful view of the countryside and city below. Lucca is a perfect place to spend a day, or when you have a little extra time between other touring, you can easily slug it in and never tire of its streets, alleys, sights and shops. It is a perfect place to walk around, the walls not withstanding (in fact for the walls we suggest renting a bike and seeing the city that way - on the walls and off). We fondly call it "Florence without the scooters, people or museums." But still enough great restaurants, piazze, cafes, gelati and upscale shopping to attract the discerning folk. Here is a quick guide to our favorite restaurants (also found in more detail on our recommended restaurants in Lucca page):
Da Giulio, on via Conce Piazza San Donato
La Buca, on via della Cervia
Osteria Baralla, on via Anfiteatro
Antico Cafe, on Piazzale Vittorio Emanuele
